Music Appreciation- Bohemian Rhapsody.

I remember sitting in school waiting for my lessons to start. They called it tutorial but for us it was a meeting place to hang out, play cards, talk about girls and most of all share music. It was 1975 and I was 12 and playing guitar in a band. I knew 4 chords and played them for all I was worth. I won’t forget this morning we were sat playing cards and a friend came in and said you have to listen to this. He played a cassette tape that he had recorded off the radio. It blew me away, it broke all the norms of radio songs – it was too long, there were different sections rather than just verses and choruses and they weren’t singing about some aspect of love. My whole musical world changed that day because I was listening to Bohemian Rhapsody. Even the name sounded like it was an opera instead of a rock song. It seemed everyone else agreed and we were late for our first class because we listened to it again and again. It soared to Number 1 in the charts and stayed there for what seemed like forever.

It was then that I realised that 4 chords was never going to be enough and my serious learning journey began. Now listening to the song again it still retains its magic. It has boomed from the car of “Wayne’s World” and graced “Live Aid” where the whole audience sang the song and even the guitar solo.

I have a lot to thank Queen for and I will remember that day for the rest of my life when my 12 year old self knew that music was the only true passion of my life.

Below are the original video, the Wayne’s World moment and the fans singing for Freddie. Enjoy.
