Songwriting - The Power of Team

The Power of Team

Songwriting - Introduction

We live in a world that is moving so fast that no-one can master everything they need to create all their products, run a business and exist in the 24 hours available.

The solution is to trust other people with some of the tasks that need to be done. Collaboration with other creative songwriters reaps it's own rewards. But what of the business world?

A solution is found in websites like FIVER that offer specific tasks for a set price. You can set your deadlines and then pay for specific tasks.

This is great if you have a good budget and you don’t need any creative input. However, I have found that the people who are really good at what they do also have their own ideas and can come up with solutions I would never have thought of.

Building a Team through Trust

I have learnt that often I don’t even know the right questions to ask but I know the right people to ask and then I listen to them and learn from them.

Trust is often a barrier for a lot of people but I have worked a few strategies to work out the person in front of me.

Firstly, I listen to them. Do they know what they are talking about? Do they listen when I give them the tasks I need achieved? Do I want to spend a lot of time with this person working closely? The last question is really important because they may be capable but I will need to work closely with them for a period of time. This is not a reflection on whether they are a good person or not but whether we can work together and bring out the best in each other.

The Testing Period

Secondly, I test them. I start with small things that won’t matter if they mess up. If they can’t do the little things then they are never going to be able to grow with my needs.

Thirdly, I have accepted that they are not my friend and if I need to move onto someone else it is not personal. I will try to give them honest and constructive feedback but this is not always received.

Personal Recommendation

Lastly, once we have built a relationship and I trust them and the things they do, I ask them to recommend people that can do other tasks that I need doing.

I am gradually building a songwriting team and a business team around me of people I trust and want to spend time with. People who complement me and fill the gaps that I know are there but cannot fill myself.

For me team is the goal of my business as I already have a plan to hand over the business in the next 10 years and I am already looking for the people who be part of the team to do that.

I don’t know how many of the present team will be with me in 10 years but I want to be building them as if they will be.
